Want action? Share stories of hope!

When working with leaders in the sustainability and social change space, I sometimes get asked: “How can I stay positive when all the evidence of climate change and social injustices around us is so depressing and overwhelming?”

Leaders have a choice. In every moment.

They can act like the rabbit in the headlights and freeze OR become more like a squirrel before winter. The colder it becomes, the more active the squirrel will be to collect food.

If you want your team to swiftly action on any challenge, lead with love and share stories of hope and heroes. Stories shape how we look at situations.

Feeling hopeless about a situation is cognitively associated with inaction. Instead of being defeatist, look to heroes who are leading the way. Share the inspiration coming from their actions. No matter how small they might be.

Why are we inspired by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg who was a lone protester against climate change inaction, sitting in front of the Swedish Parliament? Greta said it as it is and inspired action – in the most unlikely places. First, she spoke at the World Economic Forum in Davos and on Friday, 15thMarch, her school strike will take to the streets in about 20 countries. Her small action has morphed into a global movement, activated thousands of young people around the world. It even triggered some powerful organisational leaders into action*. Greta represents hope – on many different levels. I don’t think she set out thinking it would be that big. She just did a small thing that was in her circle of influence and capabilities.

What type of stories are you sharing?

A small but important caveat: no matter how positive you are as a leader, there will always be moments when a story of hope might not naturally come to you and you will experience varying levels of frustration and may be even venting that. That is ok to a degree. The question is: how quickly will you become aware of the inefficient use of your energy? After some moments of self-compassion and care, quickly get back to work: lead with love and not fear.

Let me know what you think.
